July 16, 2011- Adding Insult to Injury

Today we got a lot done when Northwood arrived 45 minutes early. They were able to sort out the clothing and set up teams while we were at each area. The teams were separated from clothes and food distribution, drinks, music, evangelism and prayer, and garbage cleanup.

We still had a couple families from the seminary. I'm thankful for James and his wife Talisha(sp) and Zach and Abbie. We loaded up toiletries, about 6 bags of clothes, shoes, underwear, socks, 80 hotdogs, 50 sandwiches, green tea, gatorade, watermelon, and tracts.

The first stop was at the Texas Car Wash at 10a, but we moved further in and we weren't at the original place we usually meet at. Rather we were next to a wooden shack so we set up our base there. From the start there was much clothing, but as the time wore on, we found out several people who were struggling. Claudia was still missing her Guatemalen husband (deported or imporisoned, don't know which story is true), Ricky was stabbed in the neck for owing money, Noriega was pushed down a rocky sloped and punched out for his wallet, Susan beaten by her husband with a warrant of arrest for his fiance, and several others with several other issues. We sat and prayed with many of them and were able to medically help a few. One with some tylenol and another with some bandaids. Northwood had set up a few guys to do garbage.

The second stop brought us to the area near Shamrock. We set base there and helped out about 20+ more. There we got rid of most of our hotdogs, sandwiches, and clothes. We also cleaned the area and a few of the students got to know Betty and a few other of the guys. I also had a blessing, by overhearing that Shaun, a person who didn't like me sharing the gospel a month ago, heard the gospel a couple weeks ago and accept the Lord. He was very different. He was positive uplifting and shared that he's running back to Him like the prodigal son. This was awesome. We helped Venita and her boys again. I'm puzzled at why the doctor increased the potency of Ruben's medication. We got to pray in a big circle for a bunch of them. I had a conversation with the attorney next door. His name was David. He has done his fair share of social work, especially in Phoenix, AZ. He told me things that we do that meet simple needs does not work. His advice to us is to leave them alone since none of them have the heart to change. We're better off doing it elsewhere. Unfortuantely, i disagreed with lots of his points, but I was willing to move the location to across the street so we're not in his way. From the talk, I gathered that the local government is getting rid of the gas station and the food store there. They allow the homeless to drink liquor around there, and that's illegal.

Our third stop took us to Susan. Armed with 40 people we cleaned the outside of the house and inside. The place was very clean when we left. Unfortunately, the landlord is looking for $200 or else she's out of the house. There's a warrant for the arrest of Aaron as I mentioned earlier. He broke two windows and knocked the door down. There's alot of domestic abuse and the televisions were stolen and he took off with anything that's worth any value.

We prayed for her. Hopefully she'll stay put. We blessed her with much food. I praise God for the Northwood Youth Team that came over. They did an amazing job. They did not complain and every response was "Yes Sir" or "Yes Ma'am". They were ready and engaged to represent Christ.

Till next time...

July 5, 2011- Backpacks! Begin!

Got an email from Officer Munday to start distributing backpacks. Instead of focusing our efforts at school he decided Hillside Community Center would be preferable. This would give us opportunity to give Bibles, share the gospel, and provide love and care to these families.

Here's my email to all those interested in participating as well as the email correspondence between Officer Munday and me.

--------------------------------

Hey ya’ll,

The time and date has been finalized. We will be distributing backpacks to Hillside Community Center. I attached the email with what they were asking for. Please confirm with me a couple things.

1) How many backpacks would you be able to donate?

2) Would you be able to fill the packs with supplies?

3) Would you be willing to be a place to be a storage location?

We will rendezvous on that day sometime around noon. Since it’s at 3pm it might be harder to get all of ya’ll off of work. Let me know if this is a problem. The total has been reduced to 150. This would be more manageable.

Phill

Good Morning,

Chris, I hope all is well. The date for the Back to School Giveaway will be August 12, 2011 at 3:00pm. The goal this year is to give 150 school aged children a back pack filled with school supplies. With the supplies we will stick with the basics: notebook paper, spirals, folders, pencils, pens, crayons, map pencils, erasers, scissors, and rulers. If you have any questions/concerns please let me know. Thank you in advance for all your help!!!

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Have a great day.

July 2, 2011- Not All is Lost

We started the journey this week with 6 bags of clothes at the house needing to be sort. Then Janice came with more clothes. Armed with man pants, women's summer tees, shorts, and some shoes, we headed out. James, Jenny, and a small team from NFWBC tagged along. Also, Thai and Matt joined us yet again. Love those guys. We got some street musician friends who came up and played for the homeless. Praise God for Abbie and Zach. Their music was great!

The whole team was able to put together 80+ hot dogs, chips, drinks, ice, water, and bananas. With the musicians we were able to mingle more with the first and second group. The first group had a few guys standing up and praise God through the music. They were drunk, but nonetheless it was great watching them still give thanks to God. There was one person who wasn't fascinated by what we were doing, but we loved on her anyway. We passed out many of our toiletries and clothes to this group. After all the work, we made a circle and prayed. Indio and a couple other homeless guys prayed. Then came Erica, a trans-gendered man came up and had a fit. He assumed we all were condemning him for his looks. I was able to calm him down so we could finish praying. From there we took off to the second stop. But for a while we lost our friend Jennifer. Praise the Lord she found us!

Here's some thoughts from Janice:

I has the privilege of visiting with "Indio" (not sure if I have his name right) who I believe is a former preacher. We shared with each other the things we were struggling with in our lives. I was very touched that he asked me how my life was going. I rarely have anyone ask me about myself. He is struggling with a powerful common addiction and he told me he didn't have the courage to get help in order to change. We agreed that God was bigger than his problem. Indio lives in the hopelessness of his addiction and is struggling to find the courage to break free. I encouraged him to remember that God just needs him to be willing. He prayed for all of us.

We moved to a field in the back of Love Fellowship Church. There we unloaded and started calling the homeless by the gas station to that area. We first saw Elizabeth who hung with us for a while. A couple other guys stopped by to eat. Some stayed for a while just to listen to the musicians praise the Lord. It's amazing how many of them just stayed to chill with us. I'm still waiting for a couple testimonies, but there was a couple incidents where Thai was able to engage a couple guys and share them the love of Jesus. The Vietnamese guy we keep seeing on a bicycle still lives with his mother. It'll be great to help the family and provide more help. We also saw Betty again. She showed me her house and little garage she stayed at. Venita was a usual. She took much clothes and ranted about how her husband doesn't care about the family. We still love her two kids. After a while the numbers dwindled and I drove back and forth to help get more guys from the homeless area to get clothes and other necessities.

I got to spend some time with Yo and a few other guys. I managed to pray for one of them who needed some prayer for a job. I believe his name was Perez. From there we headed on to Susan's house.

Susan was not doing so well. Her husband, Aaron was at the hospital. She said she was abused and wasn't very happy. She's still waiting to be evicted but it's good to see that she's still there. Her rent and electric bill wasn't paid for so the house was still hot. We dropped off a few Gatorade, chips, and bananas. Continue to pray for her!

I accidentally deleted all the pictures this week from my phone. I was deeply saddened for all the lost pictures. I have done pictures for three years and this is the first time I lost them. I apologize for this and hope to bring the pictures back up next time. Thanks for your understanding. Till next time...
