October 8, 2012: Captivating Grace!

It's been a while for updates, but there's alot going on for our REACH ministries.  First off, as one who has carried the torch for this ministry for the past four years, I am grateful to announce I am graduating from Southwestern Seminary.  This has brought many new changes.  Second, God has been gracious by adding new faces, brothers, and friends that have carried the torch.  I am bless to add Caleb Wallace to the team as he has taken up MHMR and continued the ministry there.  Personally, I have phased out due to mounting obligations at a new church and new preaching opportunities as I preach abroad.  Third, we have connected with Feed By Grace Ministry.   Feed by Grace have been growing since 2004.  Here are some of their own words:

Feed by Grace began as a ministry designed to install raised bed vegetable gardens that would grow food for the needy. In 2004, founder Neale Mansfield envisioned a park with gardens in the midst of the impoverished neighborhood of East Lancaster. In January 2005, the ministry began shifting its focus towards the homeless individuals who populate the neighborhood. Since that time, the ministry has been housed in a building that was once a local bar and has transformed the adjoining vacant lot into a beautiful community park for the homeless, offering a place of peace and a safe haven from the streets.

I have been so grateful to meet so many new friends that have shared my heart for the needy and the social outcast.  Kelly, Neale, and Kathy have been such a great help by allowing us to serve alongside with them.  Although we have done more than provide water, we will now have more opportunities to plant gardens, play ball, and serve food to them.  This week, on October 13, we will do Fall Festival with them, connecting with well over 500+ needy people and families on Lancaster. 

Recently, we have adopted a family, Maria Mindieta and her grandchildren to help.  We have been supplying her needs such as water and food to sustain them.  We are hoping that churches would rally more to help this family.  She has lost her vehicle, she's under Medicaid and Medicare, and constantly needs provisions for her large sized family.  Our desire is to connect them with a small group that would help nuture and reach them in the long term.  There are still many unsaved souls in that family, so it's pertinent that we continue to minister to them both socially and with the gospel. 

The streets are vastly different as Hemphill has many day laborers with a smaller homeless population.  Continue praying as we discover new ways to help the homeless.  Our strategy is to eventually phase in with a larger ministry that would put our resources to good use.  DFWPD has also called upon us to help distribute backpacks and meals for poorer families.

A couple more things to think about:

1.  We are looking to connect with a children hospital to provide ventriloquism as someone has stepped up to do that on a regular basis.

2.  We are looking also looking forward to aiding on another Thanksgiving Outreach, as well as do a Christmas outing with Feed by Grace or DFWPD.  Please keep this in your prayer as we pave the way to new ministries with new ideas.

The gate opens at 8am and closes at 3pm. We are in charge of drinks. Please be prompt and ready to share the gospel and pray.


What to do: (From Kelley O'Conan)

"Customers" will come to the booth and order a drink. Your folks would dispense the drink and collect "Unity Park money" from the customer. (A homeless person is given only so much "money" so they are being thoughtful in what they "purchase" whereas the general public actually purchase the "Unity Park money" as a fundraiser). So, with that in ...mi...nd, I'd suggest making it as simple as possible.

We have a table you can use as a booth, along with maybe a few folding chairs in case your folks want to rest. Assuming you are bringing prepackaged drinks (cans of soda, bottles of water), the big push would be collecting enough ice chests and stocking them with the drinks and ice. You will want additional drinks to restock the ice chests - and you may need to make a run to get more ice midway through the day. The other option would be to make large quantities of ice tea or lemonade etc. in large-size thermoses and have your folks fill styrofoam cups with ice (from ice chests) and drink, topping it with a lid and straw. OR you could rent a refrigerated drink dispenser. It will probably depend largely on your budget and how much of what you can get donated.


As far as the quantity, I can only. Typically, there are 400-500 homeless at a Fall Festival and maybe another 100 volunteers. Many to most of these people will stay all day or be in and out all day, so I would estimate maybe 3 drinks per person. If we get a big general public turn out, I don't envision them staying all day - more like a family comes for a couple of hours - so maybe only 1 drink per person. But I'd be hard pressed to give you an anticipated total amount of drinks needed.

August 4, 2012- A Land of Opportunity

I have not blogged recently due to a large volume of things happening.  Since I'm not a journlist by nature and more proactive, I've abandoned this blog temporarily.  For that, i apologize. However, God has been gracious to us.  Not only have we been doing well with our personal ministries (Joanna and I), but we have had support in our REACH ministry.

This past week and the past few weeks we've been blessed to serve with many friends.  The Creecys, Greenways, Thai and his youth, and several others have dedicated their time to help us.  Here's a brief update.

The Mindietas just had their Jeep Cherokee taken away.  Since they haven't had much money for rent, many of their things have been given away in order for them to stay at their present location.  They have requested for more canned foods and other food items to make it week to week.  If you want to help and can help, please donate to our place or landscaping facility at Southwestern Seminary.  For more information for our address please email pkoo@swbts.edu.

Claudia one of our friends at the Texas Car Wash stop recently was hospitalized.  She was hit by a car.  Suzanne has moved back with her fiance and many others are still in the same area among the trees to avoid the heat.  There hasn't been much going on with that group, other than trying to survive the elements.  Since they're relatively heavy drinkers, they drink themselves to sleep.  We have been given ample opportunities to provide food, water, and Bibles to them.  One man this week, wanted to change and had a heart to heart with many of us.  I'm so thankful for Aaron who prayed with many of these guys in Spanish. 

At the second stop we met up with Betty.  She has been trying to save her dogs, but at the same time, she looks awfully burnt.  She had some eye-dropping wounds that doesn't seem to be healing.  She seems to be doing well, but was evicted.  Now she's living at some shack for very little money.  Pray for her so that she finds some help from area churches.  Maria also lost her son.  She has a very big boy who was well over 400lbs.  He passed away not too long ago.  She's now trying to get her sister to move out of a bad area, but even she's not listening.  The family is in bad shape.  Continue to pray for them as well.

Our last stop this week was at Lancaster.  We met up with Kathy and Neale who showed us how feeding the homeless was to be done.  They have a ministry called Feed By Grace that holds breakfast and lunch daily for homeless in that area weekly.  On Saturdays they have opportunities for food, sport, games, and fellowship.  It's such a wonderful time for all those who are needy.   We hope to build a liason with them and work alongside with them.

   - We will be meeting at 3pm at Hillside.  If you're going to be present please be ready to not only pass out tracts, but also share some love.  There are many opportunities to build relationships with these kids.

June 16, 2012- Updates, Updates, Updates!!!

Many changes took place over the past month, so I'm glad to say, that our schedule is clearing back up for a return back on the streets.  In the month of May, Joey had gone out once, while I (Phillip) along with Caleb hit up MHMR to do a Bible Study.  Last week on June 9, we finished Acts 4.  We have since moved on, and Caleb this past week went and finished Acts 5 with them.

On our end, my kids and I hit the street to serve the homeless.  At the Mindietas we were able to drop off some sandwiches, water, and candy.  They are still in need of some food, so if you're interested in donating some food, please drop them off before June 22, so my family and I can answer the request of our son, to help this family.

Our second stop took us near Texas Car Wash.  There we saw quite a few old faces, but some new ones as well.  One guy was so drunk, he just laid down in the hot sun and fell asleep near a dumpster.  The other guys, who were recognizable were sweating up a storm with their shirts off.  We fed these guys and prayed with them.  Susan stopped on by as well.  She's hasn't attended rehab, and looks like she's still jumping from male to male.  Please pray for her to open her eyes.  

The third stop took us to Lancaster street.  There we ran into at least 25-30 people who needed daily items, food, and the gospel.  Lo, and behold, my kids and I were shared the gospel with!  This lady started singing, "Jesus Love Me," and this gentleman shared Jesus with us and the love he has for Him.  It was great to hear his testimony.  We saw several others and took off.  

We will be heading out during the June 30, in which Joey will take a group then.  See you then!!!
