October 8, 2012: Captivating Grace!

It's been a while for updates, but there's alot going on for our REACH ministries.  First off, as one who has carried the torch for this ministry for the past four years, I am grateful to announce I am graduating from Southwestern Seminary.  This has brought many new changes.  Second, God has been gracious by adding new faces, brothers, and friends that have carried the torch.  I am bless to add Caleb Wallace to the team as he has taken up MHMR and continued the ministry there.  Personally, I have phased out due to mounting obligations at a new church and new preaching opportunities as I preach abroad.  Third, we have connected with Feed By Grace Ministry.   Feed by Grace have been growing since 2004.  Here are some of their own words:

Feed by Grace began as a ministry designed to install raised bed vegetable gardens that would grow food for the needy. In 2004, founder Neale Mansfield envisioned a park with gardens in the midst of the impoverished neighborhood of East Lancaster. In January 2005, the ministry began shifting its focus towards the homeless individuals who populate the neighborhood. Since that time, the ministry has been housed in a building that was once a local bar and has transformed the adjoining vacant lot into a beautiful community park for the homeless, offering a place of peace and a safe haven from the streets.

I have been so grateful to meet so many new friends that have shared my heart for the needy and the social outcast.  Kelly, Neale, and Kathy have been such a great help by allowing us to serve alongside with them.  Although we have done more than provide water, we will now have more opportunities to plant gardens, play ball, and serve food to them.  This week, on October 13, we will do Fall Festival with them, connecting with well over 500+ needy people and families on Lancaster.

Recently, we have adopted a family, Maria Mindieta and her grandchildren to help.  We have been supplying her needs such as water and food to sustain them.  We are hoping that churches would rally more to help this family.  She has lost her vehicle, she's under Medicaid and Medicare, and constantly needs provisions for her large sized family.  Our desire is to connect them with a small group that would help nuture and reach them in the long term.  There are still many unsaved souls in that family, so it's pertinent that we continue to minister to them both socially and with the gospel.

The streets are vastly different as Hemphill has many day laborers with a smaller homeless population.  Continue praying as we discover new ways to help the homeless.  Our strategy is to eventually phase in with a larger ministry that would put our resources to good use.  DFWPD has also called upon us to help distribute backpacks and meals for poorer families.

A couple more things to think about:

1.  We are looking to connect with a children hospital to provide ventriloquism as someone has stepped up to do that on a regular basis.

2.  We are looking also looking forward to aiding on another Thanksgiving Outreach, as well as do a Christmas outing with Feed by Grace or DFWPD.  Please keep this in your prayer as we pave the way to new ministries with new ideas.

Information about our OCTOBER 13 Outreach:
The gate opens at 8am and closes at 3pm. We are in charge of drinks. Please be prompt and ready to share the gospel and pray.

What to do: (From Kelley O'Conan)

"Customers" will come to the booth and order a drink. Your folks would dispense the drink and collect "Unity Park money" from the customer. (A homeless person is given only so much "money" so they are being thoughtful in what they "purchase" whereas the general public actually purchase the "Unity Park money" as a fundraiser). So, with that in ...mi...nd, I'd suggest making it as simple as possible.

We have a table you can use as a booth, along with maybe a few folding chairs in case your folks want to rest. Assuming you are bringing prepackaged drinks (cans of soda, bottles of water), the big push would be collecting enough ice chests and stocking them with the drinks and ice. You will want additional drinks to restock the ice chests - and you may need to make a run to get more ice midway through the day. The other option would be to make large quantities of ice tea or lemonade etc. in large-size thermoses and have your folks fill styrofoam cups with ice (from ice chests) and drink, topping it with a lid and straw. OR you could rent a refrigerated drink dispenser. Here is an example - not a recommendation - just to show you what I'm talking about: http://www.bigtenrentals.com/Concessions-Food-Coolers-Grills.html. It will probably depend largely on your budget and how much of what you can get donated.

As far as the quantity, I can only. Typically, there are 400-500 homeless at a Fall Festival and maybe another 100 volunteers. Many to most of these people will stay all day or be in and out all day, so I would estimate maybe 3 drinks per person. If we get a big general public turn out, I don't envision them staying all day - more like a family comes for a couple of hours - so maybe only 1 drink per person. But I'd be hard pressed to give you an anticipated total amount of drinks needed.

August 4, 2012- A Land of Opportunity

I have not blogged recently due to a large volume of things happening.  Since I'm not a journlist by nature and more proactive, I've abandoned this blog temporarily.  For that, i apologize. However, God has been gracious to us.  Not only have we been doing well with our personal ministries (Joanna and I), but we have had support in our REACH ministry.

This past week and the past few weeks we've been blessed to serve with many friends.  The Creecys, Greenways, Thai and his youth, and several others have dedicated their time to help us.  Here's a brief update.

The Mindietas just had their Jeep Cherokee taken away.  Since they haven't had much money for rent, many of their things have been given away in order for them to stay at their present location.  They have requested for more canned foods and other food items to make it week to week.  If you want to help and can help, please donate to our place or landscaping facility at Southwestern Seminary.  For more information for our address please email pkoo@swbts.edu.

Claudia one of our friends at the Texas Car Wash stop recently was hospitalized.  She was hit by a car.  Suzanne has moved back with her fiance and many others are still in the same area among the trees to avoid the heat.  There hasn't been much going on with that group, other than trying to survive the elements.  Since they're relatively heavy drinkers, they drink themselves to sleep.  We have been given ample opportunities to provide food, water, and Bibles to them.  One man this week, wanted to change and had a heart to heart with many of us.  I'm so thankful for Aaron who prayed with many of these guys in Spanish.

At the second stop we met up with Betty.  She has been trying to save her dogs, but at the same time, she looks awfully burnt.  She had some eye-dropping wounds that doesn't seem to be healing.  She seems to be doing well, but was evicted.  Now she's living at some shack for very little money.  Pray for her so that she finds some help from area churches.  Maria also lost her son.  She has a very big boy who was well over 400lbs.  He passed away not too long ago.  She's now trying to get her sister to move out of a bad area, but even she's not listening.  The family is in bad shape.  Continue to pray for them as well.

Our last stop this week was at Lancaster.  We met up with Kathy and Neale who showed us how feeding the homeless was to be done.  They have a ministry called Feed By Grace that holds breakfast and lunch daily for homeless in that area weekly.  On Saturdays they have opportunities for food, sport, games, and fellowship.  It's such a wonderful time for all those who are needy.   We hope to build a liason with them and work alongside with them.

For upcoming events:
August 10th, 2012 - 3-6pm at Hillside Community Center 1201 E. Maddox Fort Worth, TX 76104
   - We will be meeting at 3pm at Hillside.  If you're going to be present please be ready to not only pass out tracts, but also share some love.  There are many opportunities to build relationships with these kids.

June 16, 2012- Updates, Updates, Updates!!!

Many changes took place over the past month, so I'm glad to say, that our schedule is clearing back up for a return back on the streets.  In the month of May, Joey had gone out once, while I (Phillip) along with Caleb hit up MHMR to do a Bible Study.  Last week on June 9, we finished Acts 4.  We have since moved on, and Caleb this past week went and finished Acts 5 with them.

On our end, my kids and I hit the street to serve the homeless.  At the Mindietas we were able to drop off some sandwiches, water, and candy.  They are still in need of some food, so if you're interested in donating some food, please drop them off before June 22, so my family and I can answer the request of our son, to help this family.

Our second stop took us near Texas Car Wash.  There we saw quite a few old faces, but some new ones as well.  One guy was so drunk, he just laid down in the hot sun and fell asleep near a dumpster.  The other guys, who were recognizable were sweating up a storm with their shirts off.  We fed these guys and prayed with them.  Susan stopped on by as well.  She's hasn't attended rehab, and looks like she's still jumping from male to male.  Please pray for her to open her eyes.

The third stop took us to Lancaster street.  There we ran into at least 25-30 people who needed daily items, food, and the gospel.  Lo, and behold, my kids and I were shared the gospel with!  This lady started singing, "Jesus Love Me," and this gentleman shared Jesus with us and the love he has for Him.  It was great to hear his testimony.  We saw several others and took off.

We will be heading out during the June 30, in which Joey will take a group then.  See you then!!!

April 21-28, 2012- M&Ms and Plenty of Sugar!

I suppose I should blog about our MHMR meeting on April the 21st. There was just Robert today. My family and I had a family responsibility on the Saturday prior so it was Sunday when we went to visit them.

Chong had gone home with her son Owen, and Robert was present there. He went on to tell us, us being Caleb and I, about several things going on. It was a pretty full day, because I had just finished running a triathlon, so I've been up since 4am. We had worship and then I had the Bible study. Let's just say I wasn't fully there. Thank God for Caleb.

Robert told us that Chad needed prayer as his health has gone south. Larry, a new patient at the place is suicidal and severely depressed. Diana had a severe meltdown during the week, so she's at the hospital. Her release so that she can move to Denton, TX has been put on hold. The property is also having problems as the city is upon them for having too many patients in one home. Since it's just a group home, the maximum they can have is 5, even though they all pay rent. Please pray for them during this time.

Our following visit will start at 1pm as games will be played with them and Bible study will promptly being at 2pm. We went through the last chapter of John 21 and prayed with them.

If you're still following along on this blog, I commend you!

Today, on the 28th of April, we took off to visit our homeless friends on the street. Diana, Michelle, and Churee joined us for the trip down the street. Thankfully we could be the mobile church on the move. I praise God for Northwood as they sent a good number of middle/high school girls to help us out. We had a small group of 10 along with a group mom who helped us out with the Mindieta's. They took them to a small playground and played with their children, fed them, as well as spend good quality time with them.
Here are the Northwood Kids with the children.

A small group of us then took off and headed down the streets. We hit first the Texas Car Wash station where we ran into a couple familiar faces. I met Alan and shared the hope of Christ with him. Unfortunately, Connie has cancer, his wife, and he needs lots of prayer for her. I also met another man, Fernando, who's been traversing this area for a few weeks. He has a warm heart. We prayed and spent some time talking about him looking for a job.
Fernando

Alan

We moved on and headed to the day labor area near Southside Church of Christ. There we park nearside and serve tons of people. It felt like about 20. We saw Luke and I prayed for him and his friend Chazby, who is struggling with post surgery rehabilitation. He was also taking money from buddies down the street for abusing and drinking alcohol.

Fortunately, Liz was there, but she looked awful. She seemed unfit to be standing or walking. She stumbled a couple times we were there. We fed the rest of the people and took off towards Lancaster.

We moved on to Lancaster. Lancaster was busy as usual. We still don't have a good enough reputation to help out as much as we could, but we passed out food, tracts, candy, and some love. There were several people, but our food ran out so fast that it was hard to get ministry done. We are continuing in different ways to see in what other areas we can help them at.

For the time being, we will be faithful in passing out the food that we have. Our day ended on a prayerful note. I'm truly thankful in having so many arms and feet to help out each week. I'm thankful for each one of you. I pray to see ya'll again soon!

April 14, 2012- Weather or Whether?

The whole week I was dealing with whether or not the weather would put a damper on our outreach this week. It absolutely did not! We had an incredibly cool day, with cloudy skies, and ample of volunteers!

A couple of new folks from NFWBC as well as new friends showed up to help. I was accompanied by Churee's family, as well as old friends, such as Jason, Ashley, and other old faces.

I have to admit, I was distracted and out of focus today. I know my heart was just struggling with so much going on. I forgot to get a friend, I had a lackluster devotional time in the morning, and I just felt swamped. Obviously, I needed more of the Spirit's power. Nonetheless, the whole time I felt guilty without having more preparation in sharing God's Word openly. So, that being said, I apologize for not setting the pace.

On other news, we quickly sped out with loads of eggs, candy, hot dogs, sandwiches, water, bananas, and some women clothing. We took off to the Mindieta's first and spent some time there playing with the kids and the family. From there we took off to the street and hit the Texas Car Wash and met about 5-6 people there. We fed quite a few of them and I had the opportunity to speak with Claudia.

She needed some help to find her birth certificate and we met a man, Miguel, who spoke with Pastor Ruben at Southwayside Baptist Church and we got him hooked up with some help.

The third stop took us to the church near Southside Church of Christ. There we all restructured to make sure we are able to serve more effectively. We sent several teams with guys to pass out food and help out the neighborhood. There are very few familiar faces there. It could be that we're getting there later than usual.

Our final stop took us to Lancaster. There we served well over 50-60 people coming through to get food, candy, and some clothes. Unfortunately, two cars had issues. My car was overheating, which led to some trouble. Thankfully, there were several good conversations, plus some time for prayer. We all got back and was glad for another great outreach!

Somethings to think about:
Big Brother-Big Sister
The Mindieta's want 6 of their kids involved
1. Jason- 7 years old
2. Aaron- 6 years old
3. Elexus- 11 years old
4. Mia and Mya- 10 years old
5. Haley- 9 years old

If you're interested please email me, by clicking on this link.

Or, you can private message me on the Facebook page or leave a comment below with your email and i'll contact you back. Thanks!

If you're interested, we will be meeting next week to help out at MHMR. Till next time...

April 7, 2012- MHMR #9

I went out to our 9th meeting at MHMR. We had 5 people sit in for Bible study. Robert, Chong, Paul, Diana, and Sue Lee sat in for Bible Study. It was good timing that the death and resurrection were the chapters we focused on, in John. They asked many great questions about Christ. There's no denying the historicity and the emotional trauma Christ went through. I was thankful that many of them were present and was able to pray for them all.

Prayer List:
1. Robert's eye is still recovering from a cut. He's also applying for Medicaid which he's having difficulty in receiving.

2. Pray for Chong and her family, especially her son.

3. Pray for Diana and Charles as they look ready to head back to society. Hopefully God's word is engrained deep into their minds.

See you in two weeks!

March 31, 2012- From Street to Street

We had a handful of youth from Thai's church this week help out. There was about 9 of them. Then my wife, Abbie, and John took off to go out. We were armed with over 80 hot dogs, water, fruit, and tracts.

Our first stop took us to the Mindietas. They are doing well, but they have alot of needs. They expressed to us the desire of their kids to have role models. Abbie, one of our helps suggested that we could adopt some sort of 'Big brother', 'Big Sister' module that may help. This would allow for more parents and volunteers to invest in the lives of these children. On average there's about 10-12 children in that house, but last Thanksgiving we served well over 20 children in that one house.

The second stop took us to the car wash area where we helped 4-5 homeless. We got to serve them and give them some food. We also heard Jesse play his guitar. Once again, he played very well and we were treated to a free concert. Our next stop took us to the gas station near Southside Church of Christ. Fo stopped by, so we gave him some food.

Our last stop led us to Lancaster Street near Union Gospel Mission. We stood there as we passed out tracts and water. There were so many there, that I spent most of my time praying for them. Some of them were familiar with the gospel, and we're glad to have served and help them.

Till next week!

March 24, 2012- Two and a team

We had a group from NFWBC led by Janice to go get the Mindietas and the children. They played for a while and were able to minister to the family. I'm thankful for their approach.

Here's the account from Janice:
"We made cookies and PB&J sandwiches for the carwash. There was only two and we visited with Ernesto and another man. Then we went to Mary's. We stood inside for a few minutes because she told us CPS wouldn't let the kids outside. Apparently, one of their moms was trying to take them back.

After a few minutes, she said, "No one will touch them with all of you here," so we went to the backyard and played with them for about an hour. Football, cheerleading, cartwheels, talkng quietly on the steps. It was beautiful to see four girls who invested their lives with them and who love Jesus.

Next we went to the park a few blocks west on Bolt and played on the playground with the kids. We passed out much of the food and there was lots of smiles and sharing."

I went to MHMR at 2:00p and spent some time with Robert and the crew there. We have 5 meet as two new people came about to do Bible Study. One is Jojo, she's a young lady who's very bright and fun. Unfortunately, there is a strong sense of lostness within her. She stayed a bit and heard us go through John 18 and 19. We also had Pete, who's a new guy. He loves going to church, so I'm thankful he's a believer.

March 10, 2012- Harvest

Wow, it was an incredible day of outreach. Hannah and Janice accompanied us as we took a plethora of hot dogs, drinks, chips, and other items to bring to help the homeless in three distinct areas. The first area we went to the Mindietas. We dropped off some food and I got a message to the pastor of Southwayside Baptist Church to give them a ride to church. After that we took off to the second destination near the car wash again.

Before that, we went to Susan and dropped off some food. It was good to see her family, but she was still feeling ill. We prayed with her briefly. After that we headed off to Texas Car Wash. At the Texas Car Wash we met quite a few of the homeless guys. Unfortunately we heard of two deaths. The first of that is Chupita and the second is Ricky. We were pretty disheartened of hearing both deaths. Ricky was shot accidentally and Chupita also. Both of them being a result of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The third area, we harvested from sharing the gospel. The first, Janice was able to share with a girl named Lydia and she after hearing the gospel, and correcting false pretense was able to give her life over to Christ. The second, Shawn, heard of my story, and rededicated his life. This was great that we were able to minister on the streets and share openly the hope and life giving message of the gospel.

Overall this was a great success! I also went over to the MHMR facilty for our meeting and read through John 17 and 18. The whole group is back and I also heard they having been going to Ghambrell Baptist Church. I'm glad God is moving throughout this community. Praise the Lord for churches and people willing to work and serve together!!!
